I run Poetry with Friends and creative writing workshops via Happy Planet Creative Arts which operates out of Boo Boo and Ted, 264 Whitley Road, Whitley Bay, NE26 2TG.

Poetry with Friends sessions continue to enthrall and inspire thanks to the choice of poems and the conversations in between the poems. Recent sessions at both Boo Boo and Ted on Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings at Whitley Bay library have instigated debate on The Budget, coughs and colds, “people of a certain age”, poetic inspiration, education, astrology, EU referendum, terrorism and equality.

In between these topics we’ve shared poems by poets including Emily Dickinson, Colette Bryce, Seamus Heaney, Sylvia Plath, W.B Yeats, John Betjeman, John Keats, Jackie Kay, William Wordsworth, Gerard Manley Hopkins and numerous poems by at least six members of the Poetry with Friends gang. One of them, Alan continues to amaze us by writing there and then. On the night!

Poetry with Friends returns in April. The first Thursday morning one is April 14th and the first Tuesday evening is April 19th.

It’s always fun to blather on about creativity with me mate, Jennifer….

Today, I’m welcoming to the blog my good friend and fellow coastal writer Elaine Cusack, a writer with several strings to her bow, which she’s going to tell you about now…

killingworthThanks for joining me today Elaine. I’ve been to a lot of your performances, now, how do you prepare?

I like to know gig dates well in advance. This gives me time to prepare a set list and a script. Then I learn my poems and the script off my heart. Only then can I “loosen the stays” and allow for spontaneity and ad libs on the night.

Adrenalin always kicks in about 8 to 12 hours in advance of a performance. If the gig’s in the evening, I run through my set in the morning then spend the rest of the day cleaning the house, ironing, cooking (no computer work for me on gig days) before I launch…

Free as a Bard, the poetry and music evening I co-run with Peter Mortimer returns to Whitley’s Jam Jar Cinema this Sunday 20th March.

Colette

Poets Colette Bryce and Jeff Price will perform alongside music legend Steve Daggett.

As usual we will have our literary raffle and free fresh fruit on the tables.

These FaaB nights tend to sell out so don’t leave it until the night to buy tickets. You can buy tickets in person from the cinema from tomorrow onwards or online from now  http://www.jamjarcinema.com/

Doors open at 7.30pm and the evening will kick off at 8pm. Tickets cost a fiver.

I’m offering a range of creative writing workshops in Whitley Bay in the coming months.

First up is a Haiku workshop on Tuesday 12th April from 7pm to 9pm.Haiku is a very short poetic form which originated in Japan and became popular in Britain and North America in the early 20th century. The form’s enduring appeal rests on the capturing the essence of a moment (usually involving nature) in a three line poem. Come and learn about Haiku and have a go at writing a few of your own.

Then we have….

Talking Nonsense: in praise of comic and nonsense poetry. Do you have a secret love of Edward Lear, Ogden Nash and Pam Ayres? Come out of the poetic closet and share your love in a supportive environment! I will share my love of comic and so-called nonsense poetry and invite participants to have a go at writing their own verse. It will take place on Tuesday 10th May from 7pm to 9pm.

Do you enjoy travel writing? Have you ever wanted to write down your travelling experiences? On Tuesday 7th June from 7pm to 9pm  I will run a writing workshop called Journeys of the Mind. Do you love travelling? Join me on a voyage of discovery. Come and explore classic travel writers and have a go at writing your own experiences abroad as well as closer to home.

Black and white reading

Words of Comfort (Food). Recipes and reminiscences workshop. Do you have a treasured family recipe book or do you keep favourite recipes in your head? Isn’t it time to record them for posterity? Join me as I share the recipe for successful food writing and help to start compiling your very own recipe book. All attendees to bring along at least three favourite recipes. Tues 5th July, 7pm – 9pm

All workshops take place on Tuesday evenings in Boo  Boo & Ted, 264 Whitley Road, Whitley Bay, NE26 2TG. All workshops cost £15 (tuition and refreshments). I celebrated International Women’s Day at Segedunum in Wallsend. Segedunum is the Roman Fort at the end of Hadrian’s Wall.

The event had been organised for women on North Tyneside to come together to talk, share ideas and experiences and celebrate International Women’s Day.

Before lunch one of the speakers ended her talk with Maya Angelou’s And Still I Rise. I was due to perform one of my poems afterwards but luckily we broke for lunch. How could I top Maya?!

I kicked off proceedings after lunch with my poem Swifts Screech and Circle in the Afternoon Sun. The poem is a celebration of creative recovery and seemed apt for the day.

After workshops, we sang along with local community choir Making Waves before sharing the inspirational messages inked onto Gail’s origami cranes.

Unfortunately this coming Tuesday’s Poetry with Friends session in Whitley Bay has been cancelled. Sorry for the short notice, chums. Please pass on the message to other Poetry with Friends bods.

Our final Poetry with friends before Easter will take place as planned on Tuesday 22nd March.

It was Death at Dawn’s final performance on Wednesday 2nd March and as I walked home in the sleety rain I wondered what on earth to do with myself. The promotion of that wonderful play’s revival has been a major part of my life for the past six months. I loved every minute of my involvement in the project and look forward to seeing the talented cast perform in the future.

The following morning saw me prepping for that evening’s workshop, Writing the Unwritten at Happy Planet HQ in Whitley Bay. Prepping for and running the workshop was the perfect tonic for post performance blues. I enjoyed coaxing creativity out of the attendees with visual prompts including photos, books and postcards.

My next workshop is a Haiku workshop on Tuesday 12th April from 7pm to 9pm.Visit Happy Planet website or email gail@happyplanetcreativearts.org.uk for more information.

Future workshops include Talking Nonsense: in praise of comic and nonsense poetry. Do you have a secret love of Edward Lear, Ogden Nash and Pam Ayres?
